Q:

Who are you?

A:

    Secular Homeschoolers of Southeast Texas is a homeschooling support, events, and activity group for parents of Southeast Texas who are or are interested in homeschooling/unschooling/virtual schooling their children.  

   Our community hosts families of all types, make-ups, lifestyles, religious beliefs, and backgrounds. We deeply value diversity in our group. Though we respect spiritual/religious/philosophical/beliefs of all kinds and discussions on them, religious proselytizing is strictly prohibited. All Secular Homeschooler events are secularly orientated (meaning ‘not religious’) and inclusive - open to all families in the area who are currently educating their kids at home.  

 We hope to  make our community a better place for everyone!

Q:

What does secular mean?

A:

Simply sated, secular means without religion.  We don’t include any religious activities in SHST. We are a diverse group with many different beliefs, we respect and enjoy our diversity but leave religion out of our classes and events.

What does your group offer?

A:

We offer co-op style classes, field trips, park days, social events, and community events. We hope to serve our community in a way that make it better for everyone.

But why an axolotl?

A:

1. Axolotls are unique and intriguing creatures that capture people's attention. They have distinctive features, such as their external gills and ability to regenerate body parts, which can symbolize resilience and adaptability—important qualities for students to develop.

2. The axolotl mascot represents qualities such as resilience, adaptability, and a love for learning. Axolotls are known for their ability to regrow lost body parts, reflecting the importance of perseverance and bouncing back from challenges. They also exhibit a curiosity for their environment, which can be associated with a love for learning and exploring new knowledge.

3. An axolotl can promote school spirit by fostering a sense of uniqueness and pride among students. The mascot is featured in various school activities, merchandise, and events, creating a unifying symbol that students can rally around. Additionally, the axolotl's distinctive appearance make the mascot memorable and visually appealing.

4. The axolotl holds symbolic significance in different cultures. In Aztec mythology, it was associated with transformation and rebirth. As a mascot, the axolotl can convey the idea of personal growth and embracing change, inspiring students to strive for self-improvement and embrace new opportunities.

5. The axolotl is an endangered species native to Mexico, and having it as a school mascot can raise awareness about conservation and environmental stewardship. It presents an opportunity to educate students about the importance of preserving biodiversity and protecting vulnerable species, promoting a sense of responsibility and environmental consciousness.
